5 Arrow Replacements

Arrow recently had it’s mid season finale. There is only one way to describe my feelings toward it.  Double U. Tee. Eff.  That was pretty much the most epic ending they have ever done (and that includes the episode where a man was struck by lightning).  In case you missed it, SPOILERS AHEAD: In order to protect his sister, Oliver challenges Ra’s Al Ghul to Mortal Kombat on top of the same snowy mountain from Batman Begins or possibly Frozen.  If there is one thing Ra’s Al Ghul knows better than anyone, it’s that sword fighting looks bad ass in winter.

Do you wanna build a snowman?

After a particularly brutal fight, Oliver is stabbed through the chest and kicked off a cliff.  The end.  So . . . did Arrow just kill off it’s protagonist?  TECHNICALLY, it’s an ensemble show but Oliver Queen is pretty much the main character and the show has been structured around him.  The show is called Arrow because it's about his journey to becoming Green Arrow for crying out loud!  So what’s next?  Well to find out for sure we’ll have to wait till January 21, but for now it’s fun to guess.  Let's assume the worst and that the charismatic Stephen Amell has lost his job and Oliver Queen will no longer be on the show.  Here is my list of the 5 people that could replace the Arrow after this epic finale:

RED ARROW:
If there was one person that could was being groomed to take over in Oliver's absence it's Roy.  He's had a very interesting journey on the show.  He started off as a punk, then the Vigilante's #1 fan, then the Arrow's "eyes and ears", then a Mirakuru rage monster, and now he's Arsenal.  Jeez! That's quite a resume for someone that's only been on the show since the second half of season one! I wasn't a Roy fan at first but I think he's really come into his own. He's a much more likable character now that he isn't pissed off all the time. He's become a hero in his own right and with Oliver out of the picture, now is his chance to shine. Roy has been doing great as the sidekick so far this year but it's not like the producers to let a character stay on the sidelines for long.  Starling City needs the Arrow, and, once upon a time, Roy did join the Justice League under the name Red Arrow . . .

BLACK CANARY:
We all know this is happening.  We knew it the moment Tommy called her “Dinah Laurel Lance.”  Laurel’s journey so far this season has been about finding out who killed Sara and exacting revenge.  It’s been a much better season for Laurel than she has ever had.  She’s finally stepping up and becoming a more integral part of the show as opposed to just a former love interest.  After she discovered Oliver's secret she became a bigger part of the show in a very good way. I’ve always been a big fan of the Black Canary character from the comics and the cartoons. I liked Sara a lot, so I was sad to see her go but I knew it was inevitable with Laurel waiting in the wings.  I’m also a big fan of Katie Cassidy so I’m excited to see her take on Laurel’s rise to super heroics.  Too bad she didn’t have these skills when she was Taken.

If you don't let my daughter go I will find you and I will kill you!

Hahaha! Remember that?  She died! Oh boy . . . Anyway, where was I?  Oh yeah . . .

DIGGLE (would it be racist to call him Black Arrow?):
Diggle is my favorite character on the show.  He’s funny, loyal, brave, and uncompromising on his values. He was Oliver's first partner and the one that really challenged him to be more of a hero instead of just a vigilante. He's helped Oliver behind the scenes, in the field, and in his personal life.  If there is anyone more qualified than Diggle on the show then I can't think of them (excluding the other four candidates on this list of course).  He's led the Suicide Squad, taken on Deathstroke, Deadshot, Solomon Grundy, and still managed to father a child!  That's quite an impressive track record for someone who's secret identity is Oliver's "black driver."  Seriously though, Diggle could easily step into the role of Starling City's protector.

THE ATOM:
Over the summer the headlines said, “Former Superman cast as Atom on Arrow.”  Dude!  That’s awesome!  I actually liked Brandon Routh as Superman and I wish he had another chance to play the part. But now he’s got a second chance at being a superhero and so far he is nailing it!  The Atom had some great moments in Justice League Unlimited not to mention the “Identity Crisis” and "Blackest Night" stories from the comic books. Routh is playing Ray as funny, a little mysterious, and very charming.  He's a great foil for Oliver and has great chemistry with Felicity. He said that he wants to save Starling City but is he going to be a crime fighter or, to quote Oliver, something else?  Before he can take to the mean streets of Starling City, he’s gonna have to go through his own version of “the Island." He's trying to prevent his loss from happening to anyone else, but, as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.  I think he'll have to prove himself a hero before he can jump into a new red and blue suit.

Or he could be the villain as Evil Ex #3! Twist!

And the final suggestion for who could replace Oliver as the Arrow:

CONNOR HAWKE:
Sure he's only like 7 or 8 years old on the show but that doesn't mean he can't be a bad ass superhero.  Just look at Damian Wayne!

Ain't no thing like me, 'cept me!

It's only a matter of time before that kid finds out who his real father is and decides to follow in his footsteps.  In fact, that's what happened in the comic books!  If they really intend to kill off Oliver, it would be up to his son to take on his crusade.  Plus, wouldn't it be awesome to see a little kid as Arrow?  He could say, "You have failed this city!" It would be like the Hunger Games meets Gotham!

These are my picks for Oliver's replacement should his death prove permanent.  Obviously, Oliver won't be killed off the show. There is too much story left for him! I mean he just took on the Flash!  However, if the producers of Arrow have shown us anything it's that no one is safe on their show.  Yikes, now that I think about it, he's probably not coming back.

Goodbye Shirtless Amell!  We'll miss your abs!
